What's included in OneSearch?

Answer

OneSearch is a complex discovery system beyond a traditional library catalog. Think Google, but refined to our UT Knoxville content plus curated indexed content. Results can change daily due to new acquisitions, cancellations, or indexing.

There are four search group options in OneSearch shown in the search bar drop down:

  • OneSearch (default search)- A blended search of all physical/print, electronic, and digital content from our institution, open access content, plus our institution's Central Discovery Index profile. See below for more information on Central Discovery Index.
  • UT Collections- A search of all of our collections including physical/print, electronic, and digital content.
  • Articles and More- Searches content only from Central Discovery Index, which includes articles, conference proceedings, book chapters, reviews, technical reports, etc.
  • Course Reserves- Searches content that is placed on reserve for specific courses at UT Knoxville.

There are also additional search options in the top menu:

  • E-journals by Subject- Directs to Browzine. Browzine searches our E-journal holdings by subject.
  • Journals by Title- Searches journals (physical/print and electronic) by title or ISSN.
  • Databases- Directs to a listing of our databases. Search by subject or use the A-Z list. This is great if you know a specific collection you want to search or browse. All of the databases on the list can be found in OneSearch as well.
  • Newspapers- Specifically searches newspaper content from our holdings and the Central Discovery Index.
  • Browse- Offers a "browsable" list of Title, Authors, Subjects, and Call Numbers.
  • Citation Linker- This search is great if you already have a citation or ID number for a specific item like DOI, PMID, or ISSN.

Refining Your Search

Use the filters on the left sidebar to refine your search by content type, publication year, and more! You can also conduct an Advanced Search.

What is Central Discovery Index?

Central Discovery Index (CDI) is the content index used behind the scenes in OneSearch to enhance discoverability and full-text linking to resources. The index houses billions of citations collected from scholarly e-resources including journal articles, e-books, legal documents and more. They are harvested from thousands of primary and secondary commercial publishers and aggregators, and from open-access repositories. CDI is also a relational database between citations rather than just an aggregated list of abstracts or citations. This enables linking features like those between a book review and the book in question, or a book chapter and the entire book. By default, CDI will try to display results for material where the full text is available based on our local subscriptions.
