What is a permalink and why should I use one?

The Problem: Copying and pasting the URL in your web browser's address bar may contain temporary variables that will not work later. Also, those URLs may not properly authenticate you as a UTK patron. To make a URL work with the Libraries' subscriptions, it needs to go through our proxy server so that you will be properly authenticated.

The Solution: We encourage you to use permalinks when sharing library resources on Canvas, syllabi, reading lists, etc. All permalinks in OneSearch are configured on the back-end to properly authenticate you whether you are on-campus or off-campus.

A permalink, also known as a persistent link, durable link, or stable link, is a URL that connects directly to a specific library resource. Unlike many URLs, a permalink is designed to not break.

You can easily find a permalink for any resource in OneSearch in the "Send To" portion of the record. Select Permalink:
